The most notable influence on the author when writing this fast-paced action series was the intense and aggressive fighting styles used by the characters in the Mortal Kombat video games. As such, the main character, Mortem, adopts a brutal fighting style in which he uses his dangerous ability to target specific bones and organs in his opponent's body. Mortem's act of treason brings him into conflict with several people from his past, like Luke Bronson and Hattori Hanzo. Other main characters include Monica Wintergreen, a young woman who is particularly skilled at using The Northern Winds, a difficult technique that has claimed the lives of several people who have used it in the past.
